Σκέφτηκα λοιπόν, το εξής: Γιατί η επόμενη συγκέντρωση φίλων που θα γίνει σπίτι μου να μην έχει ένα χρώμα κι άρωμα φανταστικό; Το σκεφτόμουν αρκετό καιρό, να πω την αλήθεια, αλλά δεν υπήρχε κάποια ιδέα που να μου αρέσει τόσο ώστε θέλω πραγματικά να την προσφέρω σ' αυτούς που αγαπώ ως έδεσμα κι απόλαυση.
Μέχρι που έπεσε στα χέρια μου, αρχές Σεπτεμβρίου, αυτό το βιβλίο:
These days my friends and I talk about a cooking reality show. All of us are fans of fantasy literature, so we all offered several ideas for cuttlefish a la Cthulhu, grilled sandworm with spices and bruscetta with lembas bread.
So here’s what I thought: why shouldn’t the next gathering of friends at my place have a fantasy theme? To tell the truth, I’ve been thinking about it for quite some time, but there wasn’t any idea to love so much that I would really want to offer to my friends. An idea for them to both eat and delight.
Until on early September, this book fell into my arms:
As you can tell from the picture, it's Dzur, by Steven Brust, the tenth book in the fantasy noir series, starring Vlad Taltos. Generally Brust has a soft spot for strange narrative techniques: for example, in "Teckla", the third book in the series, the preface is a note from the hero to the guy who has the local laundry (gray shirt with a wine stain on right sleeve, grease stain on the left sleeve and a tear on the right cuff, etc.). When you start the story, you note that any reference to a stain or tear is explained in the chapter, such was the sleeve stained with wine, such was the sleeve stained with fat, such was the cuff torn. And while you know what you’re going to see (e.g. clean the stain of blood on the trousers), you never know how this is going to happen and this stimulates the pleasure of reading.
In Dzur, Broust has found new literature toys to play with. It begins with Vlad sitting at his favorite restaurant with a Dzurlord as dinner companion. Then at the beginning of each chapter, he describes a part of the meal, with so much tenacity, detail and love that ...
... that, well, I decided that this was the idea I was waiting to find and recreate.
Thus, and while perhaps I shouldn’t spoil the surprise to those who will ultimately sit on that table with me, little by little, I will gather all the preparations and adjustments I will have to make and I will talk about that meal in public.
Needless to say I'm infatuated with the prospect of a Dzur Dinner Reconstructed. I am intrigued by the prospect of things I need to make by myself, I sit and think what and with what I could replace, how I want them to be displayed. Brust has managed to become utterly descriptive, even when it comes to wine: I guess it won’t be difficult for a sommelier to find the wines that are described.
As for the food ... Trust me.
This meal will be served five Sundays from today, on November 21, five days after my birthday. Until then, and every Sunday, I will be uploading something about the meal, either the content or the problems and ideas of its reconstruction.
